Reinforcing women’s safety on city roads
To address the issue of crimes against women on roads, the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Centre (UTTIPEC) will now be designing roads and monitoring projects from the viewpoint of women’s safety.

Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (planning and engineering) Centre or UTTIPEC is now widening its scope of activities. UTTIPEC, which is an advisory body for transportation and also issues guidelines, is planning to focus on the issue of women safety on the city roads.

A senior UTTIPEC officer said, the centre is focusing on preventing crimes through proper road designs. For example, on Mathura road crime rate is quite high. Crimes may be far higher in isolated areas but the rampant construction of boundary walls also seems to aid criminals, he added. The visibility of streets from the houses should also be unhindered. Further, hawkers and vendors on streets are also essential from point of view of women's safety.

The UTTIPEC will make it mandatory for all the agencies submitting the project on roads to work as per street guidelines. The UTTIPEC will monitor how many roads have been designed as per the guidelines. Further, the existing roads will be upgraded and the inactive areas will be made active under transit oriented development plan of the UTTIPEC.

These issues were discussed at the meeting held on last Friday of the previous month.
