The Regional Horticulture Promotion Project provides training on agro-horticultural techniques to farmers in Kalimpong, West Bengal, transforming agriculture from an activity for basic sustenance to a profitable and empowering livelihood.

Lack of systematic farming methods and a plethora of products from nearby cities has detrimentally affected the lives of Kalimpong farmers. To address this issue, Dr. Graham’s Homes in association with Miyazaki International Volunteer Centre (MIVC) - a Japanese NGO, with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), started the Regional Horticulture Promotion Project (RHPP) in 2009.

Under the RHPP, farmers from 20 villages in the district of Darjeeling are given contextualised theoretical and practical training on agro-horticultural procedures and techniques like soil cooking, germination and construction of low cost greenhouses.

These new techniques support off-season production and have increased the yield and income of farmers. A farmer’s co-operative with a self-help marketing system for mass production is underway.
