Karnataka pioneered the introduction of the system of ‘permits’ for efficient mineral administration by evolving robust procedures and their effective implementation to curb illegal mining. In just one year, the new system has achieved a 33% increase in government revenue through royalty and other taxes despite suppressed mineral extraction because of the temporary ban on iron ore extraction by the orders of the Supreme Court.
