Through the efforts of the NGO, Nepal Natural and Human Resource Development Association (NAHUDA), the livelihoods of those in Nepal's Sankhamul Squatter Settlement (SSS) were vastly improved.

NAHUDA’s initiative to familiarize themselves with the slum community revealed that risks of death due to health issues or even starvation were extremely high. Most alarming was the state of women, which could be seen in the large numbers of them who had cervical or breast cancer or were victims of rape.

Through the help of NAHUDA, SSA women began to collect a daily small sum of money from each household in order to generate savings and hence, security for the community. Additionally, the women began to use the NGO’s services that provide them with healthcare and education about preventive measures for diseases and general improvements in sanitation and public health.
